2 Day Course

2 Day Course leading to CACDP Deaf Awareness Examination

This is an in depth course of 2 days of 6 hour sessions each plus an examination lasting 30 minutes which will consist of 20 multi-choice and 8 short answer questions.

Course content:

1. Defining Deafness
Statistics - Terminology - Different types of deafness
Tinnitus Identifying a deaf person

2. Developing Communication Tactics
Understanding the rules of good communication
Practising good communication
Fingerspelling - British Manual Alphabet
Using expression and gesture

3. Language and culture
Understanding deaf people's identity
A pride in their language culture

4. Deaf Experience and Discrimination
What is it like to be deaf - including psychological effects of deafness
Disability Discrimination Act

5. Hearing Aids and Cochlear Implants
Hearing aids - help or hindrance
What is it like to listen through a hearing aid
What is a cochlear implant and how does it work
Attitudes toward cochlear implants

6. Technical Aids to Communication
Understanding what is available and who uses it
Alerting equipment
Listening equipment
Textphones and other telecommunication equipment

7. Human Aids to Communication
Understanding the role of an interpreter, a lipspeaker, a notetaker and speech to text reporter
How to use an interpreter
How to book an interpreter

In order to be successful in the Deaf Awareness exam, students will need to have an understanding of all the above subjects.
