Equipment Advice and Demonstrations Fortunately these days the cost is not as prohibitive as it once was for many items and often more expensive items can be loaned form Social Services Telephones Often the most frustrating thing for people with a hearing loss! NWDA work closely with BT age and Disability Team to ensure Hard of Hearing people can use amplified telephones. The most popular phone at the moment is the BT Big Button 100 this phone enables people with a hearing loss and a sight loss to use the phone more easily at a reasonable cost. This phone has the advantage as with all BT corded phones of being further amplified with an additional in line amplifier. Profoundly Deaf People have a variety of communication methods such as Text Phones as well as Fax Email MSN and Short Message Service SMS mobile or landline Alerting Equipment Everyday sounds such as Doorbells, Telephone Ringers, Smoke Detectors and Baby and Toddle Monitors can be easily alerted to people with a hearing loss in a variety of ways usually amplified, Vibration or Flashing Lights. Doorbells are now more often wire free and can be carried form room-to-room or smaller doorbells can be clipped to a belt or carried in your pocket. Hearing the Telephone in all areas of the home can be difficult, but with a BT Tone Caller fitted free of charge this problem can be eliminated. Telephone Flashes can also help and can be as cheap as £17 Smoke Detectors can be difficult to hear without a hearing aid such as in bed so a visual and vibrating alarm can be a lifesaver. Hearing the alarm clock in the morning can be difficult and lead to a stressed night with loss of sleep! Not with a vibrating Alarm at £15 the most popular alarm clock with Deaf and Deafened People offers great value for money. A variety of baby alarms are available to ensure Deaf and Deafened Mums and Dads are woken up or alerted during the daytime. Television Loop Systems and Personal Amplifiers There is now a large range of Television Amplifiers that enable Deaf and Hard of Hearing People to enjoy watching Television with hearing companions in harmony. These systems often work in conjunction with the conductive coupler in a hearing aid often know as the T switch and a Loop System, either fitted around the room or with a more portable seat loop pad. The Resource Service From NWDA If you feel you or a family member of friend could benefit from any of these items of equipment you may contact NWDA and ask for advice, a home visit or visit NWDA for a trial. Many items can be bought form NWDA at cost price; we don't make a profit from disability! If you wish to ask your local Social Services Department for an item on loan NWDA can help with this request. |
